Can My Pet Have That? Safe and Unsafe Chew Toys

by | Dec 19, 2025

From leashes to treats to toys, pet essentials come in all shapes and sizes but not everything on the shelf is safe. Some popular chew toys can actually cause dental fractures, choking, or gastrointestinal blockages. At Willapa Veterinary Service, we want to help you choose chews that are fun, durable, and safe for your pet.

Safe chew toys for pets

There are many great options designed with your pet’s health in mind. Two of our top recommendations include:

  • KONG® Toys: Made from durable rubber and available in different strengths for various chewing levels. These can be filled with peanut butter, canned food, or other pet-safe treats for hours of enrichment.
  • VOHC-Approved Chews: The Veterinary Oral Health Council awards its seal to chews that help reduce plaque and tartar buildup. Look for the VOHC seal to find a chew that supports both playtime and dental health.

Unsafe chew toys for pets

Not all “chew-safe” products live up to their claims. Avoid:

  • Antlers, Hooves, and Bones: These extremely hard items can fracture teeth and splinter, creating dangerous internal injuries if swallowed.
  • Rawhides: While long-lasting, rawhides can become slimy and soft, leading to choking or intestinal obstruction. They’re also heavily processed and may contain chemical residues.

If you’re unsure whether a toy is safe for your pet, contact Willapa Veterinary Service. We’re happy to help you make the safest choice for your four-legged friend.
